Where to donate a couch in North County San Diego (who actually shows up)
Most San Diego junk guides tell you to "donate it first" and leave it there. We called the actual numbers for North County. Some charities show up free. Some now run pickups through a paid network called ReSupply and will quote you a price before a truck moves. One chain that still shows up all over Google has closed every store in the county. Here is who is real right now, checked against each group's own site this week.
Free pickup, no catch
Veterans Thrift Store covers Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos, Escondido, Fallbrook and Ramona with free pickup, and they will take a non-running car along with the couch if you have one. Call (619) 337-9244 or book online. Nearest store: 1624 S Coast Hwy, Oceanside.
Assistance League of North Coast serves Carlsbad, Oceanside and Vista. Drop off at the thrift shop, 1830 Oceanside Blvd Ste A, Oceanside, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 10am to 1pm, no appointment needed. Their list says small furniture and no beds or bed frames, and they do not advertise a pickup truck, so a full couch is a phone call first: (760) 722-2286.
Brother Benno Foundation runs North County Coastal pickups out of Oceanside. Text a photo to (760) 623-6171 or email furniture@brotherbenno.org and a driver calls back within 48 hours. Photos are mandatory before they will schedule anything, they do not take mattresses of any size (Health Department rules), and they only take what they can resell immediately, so the bar is real: no stains, no rips, no missing pieces.
Habitat ReStore: gone from San Diego County
Every Habitat ReStore result you will see on Google or Yelp for San Diego County is dead. San Diego Habitat for Humanity closed the Escondido store (837 Metcalf St) at the end of December 2023, then shut its last two, Kearny Mesa and National City, in October 2024. The donation pickup and the dispatch line went with them. If a directory still shows the Escondido store or the old Carlsbad location at 1810 Marron Rd as open, do not drive there. There is no ReStore to hand a couch to anywhere in the county right now.

Goodwill and Salvation Army will still take it, but pickup may cost you now
Both run a chunk of their furniture pickups through ReSupply, a third-party network that quotes a price before anyone loads a truck. Goodwill's ReSupply pickups are quoted per job, and the published starting range runs roughly $39 to $99 depending on size, quantity and add-ons like stairs, confirmed before anything moves. Salvation Army books the same way in a lot of markets: call 1-800-728-7825 and ask for a quote before you commit, don't assume free.
The workaround is the same as it always was: drive it to a store yourself and the drop-off is free. Goodwill San Diego has donation centers across North County (their locator at sdgoodwill.org shows the closest one). Most couches will not fit in a sedan, which is exactly why the paid pickup exists.
What none of them will take
Every charity above can and will turn a couch away at the curb. Torn cushions, pet stains, cigarette smell, a broken frame, particle-board pieces that have swelled from water, a sectional too heavy for two people to carry, they all get refused for the same reason: it cannot be resold. That is the actual line between a donation and junk. If it fails that test, no phone call changes the answer.
Run the gut check before you call anyone: stand behind it, look at the seat cushions in daylight, check the underside for water rings, and ask if you would sit on it in a stranger's living room. If the answer is no, every group above will say no too, and it saves everyone a wasted trip.
If it doesn't qualify, this is a flat rate, not a maybe
